Planned Parenthood Arizona filed a lawsuit in federal court yesterday to prevent a Center for Arizona Policy (CAP)-supported law from taking effect. The bill, HB 2800, prohibits taxpayer dollars from going to abortion providers.
CAP, along with the Susan B. Anthony List and Alliance Defending Freedom helped draft HB 2800.
“Arizonans don’t want their taxpayer dollars funding abortion,” said Cathi Herrod, President of Center for Arizona Policy. “The reality is that abortion not only ends the life of a preborn child, but also harms women. This is not an industry that deserves any taxpayer funds.”
This new law ensures that abortions are not indirectly subsidized by cutting off abortion providers from receiving family planning funds that pass through the state. In addition, the bill prioritizes family planning funding to those entities that provide a range of services, rather than funding entities that provide limited care and emphasize abortion.
HB 2800 was sponsored by Representative Justin Olson and signed into law by Governor Brewer on May 4. It is scheduled to take effect on August 2.
CAP is committed to standing for the rights of taxpayers to not subsidize abortions.
