A Statement from Center for Arizona Policy President Cathi Herrod
I applaud today’s bold move by the U.S. House of Representatives to protect taxpayers from being forced to pay for abortions. The House’s vote to pass the “No Taxpayer Funding of Abortion Act” would prohibit the use of federal funds for abortions, including abortions currently covered under Obamacare.
It is a victory for Americans who value the sanctity of life from conception and who see the devastating consequences of abortion, not only for the preborn but also for the mother. Abortion takes life and breaks hearts, as many women suffer a lifetime of regret and heartache after choosing abortion.
Statistics show that direct federal funding for abortion increases the number of abortions performed. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the federal government would have paid for as many as 675,000 abortions annually if the Hyde Amendment and other measures were not in place to prevent taxpayer funding of abortion in government supported programs. Since 1976, the Hyde Amendment has saved over two million preborn babies.
I thank the Arizona representatives who voted in favor of the bill, Reps. Trent Franks, Andy Biggs, David Schweikert, Paul Gosar, and Martha McSally. I ask Arizona Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake to also vote in favor of this life-saving bill.
I look forward to President Trump signing this significant piece of pro-life legislation that would permanently reinstate the Hyde Amendment.
