First, a special note on the fight against Prop 139: Watch here AZ physicians and others at a press conference this week countering false claims perpetrated by proponents.
If you are discouraged about some of your options in this election, or wondering if your vote even matters, imagine waking up November 6th (or whenever the final results come in) and the one candidate you really disagree with won… by one vote.
Even if it was 10 or 50 votes, how many people stayed home Election Day and changed the trajectory of the state, or even the country?
Consider this: A recent look at how often one vote matters found an astounding 636 races ended in ties! An additional 173 were decided by just one vote. The Washington Stand reported that this research doesn’t even give a full view of how often races come down to a single vote.
Just two years ago, Kristin Kassner won her Massachusetts State House race by a single vote. And as far back as 1876, the presidential race was won by a single electoral vote, giving Rutherford Hayes the win.
Here in Arizona, card games have decided winners. 2009’s Cave Creek Town Council came down to a high card draw in front of a judge. Only a few short years ago, a state legislative race was decided by a hand of poker dealt on the floor of the Arizona House.
Congressman Andy Biggs won his 2016 Congressional primary by 27 votes. Prior to the recount, only nine votes separated him from his opponent. And Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes won her 2022 election by just 280 votes over Abe Hamadeh.
Today’s headlines warn the 2024 president race is on “A Razor’s Edge,” and the two candidates are “Locked in a Close Race.” It’s what they said in 1960, when John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon were tied at 47 percent. Kennedy beat Nixon by 0.174% of the 68.8 million votes cast.
To Vote or Not to Vote
In just five days, it will all be over but the final tally. Once settled, we will know what kind of future lies ahead. That’s not over stating it when you consider how divided our country and our state has become.
Consider what is at stake: If Arizona loses the pro-family, pro-life legislature, Governor Katie Hobbs will be signing laws that repeal every pro-life law and expanding abortion without limits. Laws protecting children from dangerous cross-sex hormones and puberty blockers will fall, and parents who don’t affirm their child’s confused gender identity will be at risk of losing them to the state.
Euthanasia will be legalized in Arizona, and the government will tell churches when they can open and who they can hire.
Again, I’m not overstating; many lawmakers have been introducing these bills each year and are waiting for the right people in power to get such legislation passed.
If Prop 139 passes, abortion will be a fundamental right in our State Constitution, allowing abortion throughout the pregnancy and without regulation. A Prop 140 passage will lead to disenfranchised voters and the Secretary of State deciding which candidates advance to the general election.
We cannot wait for the perfect circumstances, opportunity, or candidate. The views of many state, local, and federal candidates are too extreme to allow to take root.
Vote. Encourage your friends, family, and coworkers to vote. Turnout is critical, and your vote truly does matter.
General Election Prayer Rally
Join us this Sunday, November 3, when we will gather at the Arizona State Capitol on the House Lawn to pray for the General Election, the candidates, our nation, and our state.
You are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, as no seating will be provided. Children are welcome to attend. Worship begins at 2:30, and prayer begins at 3:00.
AZ Voter Guide
CAP’s AZ Voter Guide can help you find the candidates that best align with your values. This year, on behalf of the Arizona Christian Education Coalition and others, our CAP team has produced an AZ Education Voter Guide to help voters determine which candidates align with their values specifically on educating children. This guide focuses only on candidates for state senate and state house.
