Hello Friends,
I want to start by saying, I am proud to follow Cathi Herrod as CAP’s new President. For the last two decades, Cathi has served families in this state by living out courage and compassion. Courage — because she has not hesitated to stand for what is right and what is true.
Even when it was hard…
Even when it made her the target of unrelenting, unfair criticism…
Even if it meant she would be standing alone.
Compassion — because Cathi’s life of public service is truly motivated by love. Her stand against abortion, for example, comes from her concern for both babies and mothers. I know Cathi’s heart breaks for the loss of innocent life. And I know she is also heartbroken for the mother making a tragic decision — often without the support of any community — and with terrible, painful consequences.
Many of you have sent Cathi a note of thanks. And there is still time for that! Please feel free to keep sending words of gratitude, cherished memories, and encouragement. We will make sure that Cathi sees them all.
And that leads me to the many notes I’ve received over the last few weeks: Thank you for reaching out with such welcoming and encouraging messages. My family and I feel very loved and appreciated and I am so grateful to you all.
I know many of you. My family and I have been close friends and supporters of CAP for many years. To those of you with whom I have not yet connected, I am eager to partner with you for the mission of helping families thrive in Arizona. I bring twenty years of legal and public-policy experience to this role . But most importantly, I am a husband and a father. We will not regret the time, talent, and treasure we invest in making families in Arizona strong — and our state will be much better for it.
This has been a busy week at the legislature. Our team has been engaged every day with lawmakers and staff supporting pro-family legislation. I’d like to mention a couple important bills that took significant steps in the process this week. First, HB 2062 clearly defines “male” and “female” in state law and prohibits the state from using subjective notions of gender to blur the distinction between men and women in the law. It passed out of the House on a party line vote and is headed to the Senate. Second, HB 2112 requires pornography websites to verify that users are not children before accessing graphic sexual material. This commonsense measure passed out of the House with broad bipartisan support. Brick and mortar retailers cannot sell pornography to children. But pornography websites have been allowed to distribute graphic sexual material to children. This bill protects children by putting a stop to that.
Turning to the future, I am encouraged. Opportunities abound for CAP. We have an opportunity to stop the dangerous and destructive trans agenda in its tracks — so that children will no longer be told they are incomplete and inadequate. We have an opportunity to build on the growth of educational choice — so that parents, not politicians will direct the education of their children. We have an opportunity to engage the next generation to take a bold stand for justice — and a stand for their families (or future families). This is just scratching the surface. In sum, we have an opportunity to say yes to Jesus — and serve Him by loving our neighbors by advocating for public policy that reflects the truth of the Gospel.
I’m energized. The team is energized. Let’s go!
With Gratitude and Expectation,
Peter Gentala
