Justice for Detransitioners: SB1586 Advances

In another significant step for protecting vulnerable children, SB1586passed through the House Government Committee on Wednesday. This critical legislation creates accountability for medical professionals who perform irreversible gender transition procedures on children, allowing for recovery after the child realizes the harm done to them. This is another significant moment for protecting Arizona’s youth from experimental procedures that carry life-long consequences.

The committee heard powerful testimony from Luke Healy, a 24-year-old detransitioner, who shared how he and his family were manipulated by medical professionals. “We were told that there was no feasible course other than transition or suicide,” Healy testified. “My parents were given a choice of a dead son or a living what they would call a daughter.”

Center for Arizona Policy President Peter Gentala testified in support, noting the bill “offers an opportunity for legal recovery to anyone suffering from the harmful effects of gender transition surgery performed on them as a child.”

Arizona Senator Janae Shamp closed with her personal story of being a “tomboy” and how thankful she was not to be pushed toward transition. “This isn’t about rhetoric. This isn’t about politics. This is about our children.”

The bill passed with a 4-3 vote.
