Here We Go

If you are unhappy with government hindering your parental rights, the ongoing loss of life due to abortion, infringement of your religious freedom, censoring of certain information, or any number of other issues impacting you and your family – good news! We have another opportunity to make changes and protect foundational principles: The 2022 Arizona legislative session begins Monday, January 10. Then, we elect new leaders in November.

Lawmakers have already begun filing bills. As we sift through them all and work with legislators on key bills, we need your involvement throughout the process. We will keep you informed of what is going on at the Capitol, the bills being filed, how they will affect you, and how and when to reach out to your lawmakers.

If you don’t know your lawmakers, you can find them by first identifying your legislative district here. Then match your district to your state senator and your state representative here.

Keep in mind, the Independent Redistricting Committee recently approved new district maps that will take effect next year and will apply to candidates running in the 2022 November election. See where you end up in the new congressional district map here and the legislative district map here. The old maps will remain in effect through the 2022 legislative session.

On Monday, Governor Doug Ducey will give his State of the State address, laying out his agenda for the year. This will be his last address, as his term as Governor expires this year. He is term limited from running again. Watch his address here at approximately 1:00 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. Monday. Prior to the Governor’s address, CAP will host the annual prayer walk at the Capitol. Join us at 7:00 a.m. to pray for lawmakers, state policy, and Arizona generally.

What to expect this session

The Governor’s address will give you an idea of his priorities and what you can expect, at least in part, from the coming session. He gave a glimpse of one prime concern earlier this week when he took what he called “preemptive action” to ensure kids can attend school in-person. Read more here. A few weeks ago, Governor Ducey announced support for “curriculum transparency,” which would enable parents access to what is being taught to their children in public schools. We support such a move.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs could open the door to new, bold pro-life legislation on a state level. It may also completely overturn Roe v. Wade and give states full control over abortion issues. Either way, life will continue to be a leading legislative topic moving forward. You can also expect strong opposition that will require all of us to get in the fight for life.

The battle over parental rights played a huge role in last year’s Virginia gubernatorial race, catching many off guard. Look for state legislation addressing this pressing issue as many lawmakers gear up for the November election.

A number of election laws and public school curriculum provisions were passed last session and then thrown out by a judge for technical reasons. Many of those will likely come back this year also.

We will update you each week on this page as lawmakers file bills and schedule hearings. Within a couple of weeks, the priorities of your legislators will become clear. This helps you stay involved in current policy impacting you, as well as helps to inform your vote come November.

So, stay tuned. It will be an exciting few months!
