This week’s edition was written by CAP Vice President Policy, Greg Scott. Arizona’s Attorney General Kris Mayes misused the power of her office March 13 to launch an unprovoked, dishonest attack on pregnancy resource centers (PRCs). The report produced by the attorney general’s “Reproductive Rights Unit” is disinformation that repeats the same set of lies the abortion industry has been telling about PRCs for decades. The role of the chief law enforcement officer in our state is to prosecute crimes and defend Arizona’s laws. It is not to infer crimes where there are none, or to make false accusations against innocent parties. Mayes is framing her attack against PRCs as a “consumer alert,” which is meant to protect “victims of fraudulent and deceptive practices.” But the consumer protection statutes cited on the attorney general’s consumer complaint page states that prosecution must arise from or “in connection with the sale or advertisement of any merchandise.” That’s a problem for the attorney general: PRCs are not-for-profits and don’t sell or advertise merchandise. Mayes is obviously weaponizing the state to intimidate citizens whose point of view doesn’t align with the government’s. The attorney general shouldn’t use elected office to target legitimate, law-abiding organizations whose only “crime” is disagreeing with her on abortion. Perhaps most ominously, the attorney general encourages people to go on fishing expeditions at PRCs to invent complaints. To her, those are necessary, as the report cited no complaints or allegations of wrongdoing. This call-to-action is highly irresponsible. PRCs have faced numerous violent attacks across the country in the last two years. This paints an even larger target on the back of PRCs during a dangerous time. Arizona State Rep. Neal Carter (LD-15) held a news conference Thursday calling for the attorney general to retract the alert and pointing out that the “so-called Reproductive Rights Unit is not a valid state agency.” “[The attorney general’s] publication does not cite a single example of any pregnancy center that has engaged in unlawful conduct,” said Carter. “[She] unjustly targets businesses operating well within the bounds of the law for no other reason but to advance a political agenda.” PRCs offer compassion and care. They provide women and girls with free or low-cost services like ultrasounds, pregnancy testing, counseling, childcare, diapers, formula, and other resources. Meanwhile, abortionists offer, well, abortions. It is obviously too much for extreme abortion activists when women and girls have real choices and get real help in their time of greatest need. That is why they attack PRCs. The only “choice” they want women to make is abortion. We ask you to pray for the wonderful PRCs who do selfless work for countless women, girls, and their babies in Arizona. And consider volunteering your time at a PRC. Capitol Update CAP-supported bill SB 1511 passed out of the House Health and Human Services Committee this week with a 5-4 vote. SB 1511 requires medical providers and insurers who offer services and coverage for gender “transition” to also offer care and coverage for people who detransition. A detransitioner is someone who once identified with the opposite sex, but now wishes to realign with their birth sex and live as God made them. You can follow all CAP-supported bills on our bill tracker. ICYMI
